Community and social engagement

International success

Published 26 May 2010

A joint scheme between community organisations and the University of Brighton which addresses inequalities and promoting sustainable development has won international recognition.

The Community University Partnership Programme (CUPP) received an honourable mention from a US-based organisation which is recognised as the main global network for improving higher education and civic engagement.

Bobby Gottlieb, board member of the Boston-based Community-Campus Partnerships for Health presented Paul Bramwell from Brighton's Working Together Project and Professor Angie Hart from the University of Brighton with the award, on behalf of Cupp, at a conference in Portland, Oregon.

The award described how Cupp's 50 University of Brighton staff and more than 300 community partners develop solutions to real problems, using university and community resources to tackle disadvantage and promote sustainable development.

Clive Wormald, Chief Executive Age Concern Eastbourne said: "It's been brilliant working with the university and having an independent person to talk to. To get out of your own context is very refreshing."

Steve Lawless, Chief Executive Brighton and Hove Impetus said: "The Cupp Development Team and the Director understands both sectors...fantastic really, great to work with."

Cupp's work is wide ranging and involves more than 100 projects to date, including one set supporting vulnerable adults and children with complex needs whilst another has launched a major research programme into the needs of Brighton and Hove's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual communities.

Cupp now helps other universities, particularly those in developing countries, to work in partnership with their local communities and vice versa.
