A story of adult secrets challenging a young boy's faith in his sporting hero has won a writing contest involving the universities of Brighton and Sussex.

The 'Creative Writing Olympics' asked for 2,000-word stories on sport, Olympics and challenge and was judged by academics and writers including Sussex crime author Peter James.

The winner was Dr Michael Wilson, who runs a creative writing course at the University of Brighton, with his story 'Almost Steven Gerrard'. Second and third prizes went to Sally Lawson-Cruttenden and Laura Vellacott from the University of Sussex.

The contest, funded by the Creative Campus Initiative was organised by Jess Moriarty, senior lecturer in creative writing at Brighton, and was run in conjunction with the University of the Third Age.

All entries are being published in an anthology which will be available in Waterstones, City Books and the university bookshops at the end of August.
