Students offered free courses and internships

Published 21 December 2010

Students are being offered free courses tied to internships with local not-for-profit community organisations.

The scheme is run by the University of Brighton’s Community University Partnership Programme (Cupp) which develops partnerships with community groups to tackle issues including marginalisation and disadvantage

It is offering 16 internships in Brighton, Lewes and Hastings for graduates who finished during the past two years and have not yet found graduate-level work. The free internships will be attached to a postgraduate certificate and are open to graduates from any university and are now living in the area.

Interns will be based with a third or public sector organisation for between three and five days a week over three to four months, working on leadership or development issues.

Travel expenses and their course fees will be paid by the host organisation. The postgraduate certificate and internship will provide them with credits towards a full MA, plus experience and contacts that should contribute towards finding full-time employment.

Similar internship schemes taken up in the past have included an international health promotion programme through football, support for a campaign for people with learning difficulties run by a punk rock band, and development of an alumni group for former students of the University Centre Hastings.

Interns receive academic supervision from a lecturer plus work supervision from their local organisations and regular employment-focused meetings with their peers. The different internship opportunities along with details of the internship programme and an application form are available on the Cupp website.

The closing date for applications is 15 January 2011 and all applicants will be interviewed by both the university and the organisation hosting their internship.

Dr Juliet Millican, Cupp's student community engagement officer, said: "We are keen to hear from as many applicants as possible, either graduates from Brighton or from other universities resident in the local area."
