Community and social engagement

International citizenship honour

Published 16 March 2011

The University of Brighton has won international recognition for a project which has so far encouraged 1,500 students to get involved in community projects as part of their learning programme.

It was placed second in the MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship and will collect $2,500 to help support the project activities.

The contest is run by the USA-based Talloires Network, an international association of institutions which strengthen civic roles of higher education. Awards will be presented in Madrid in June.

The successful project, Student Community Engagement, was launched by the University of Brighton's Community University Partnership Programme (Cupp) which forms partnerships with community organisations to tackle disadvantage and marginalisation.

David Wolff, Cupp director, said: "I am really proud of this achievement as it stems from many years of excellent work from all of Cupp's development managers.

"It recognises the adventurous steps that this university has taken to enable community-facing work to thrive."
