Picturing Guantanamo

Event 23 March 2011
The University of Brighton is staging a Royal Photographic Society (RPS) guest lecture entitled The Road to Guantanamo, featuring images of the notorious US detainment camp in Cuba.
The lecture will be given by photographer Edmund Clark, well known for his work surrounding the consequences of control and incarceration. He recently completed a documentary series entitled 'Guantanamo – If the light goes out'.

The photographs explore the built environment of the site and the objects that furnish it, from a desk, a prayer rug, to a restraining chair. Using the history of the still-life tradition, Clark uses the photography of objects to tell stories about the politics of modern times.
Clark also photographed the homes of ex-detainees and the relationship between the two sets of photographs help to focus minds upon the relationship between home and prison and the 'incarceration of the mind'.
RPS academic programme leader Joanna Lowry said: "The university plays an important role in the development of photographic culture in the south-east region and runs internationally-recognised undergraduate and postgraduate courses in photography. We are delighted to work with the university on the staging of this lecture".
Edmund Clark has won numerous awards, including first prize for editorial photography at the International Photography Awards, the British Journal Photography International Photography award and a Terry O'Neill award for contemporary photography. His work is in a number of public and private collections including the National Portrait Gallery, London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA.
The lecture is open to everyone and takes place 6.30–8.00pm Wednesday 23 March in the Sallis Benney Theatre, Grand Parade, Brighton BN2 0JY.
