Running for life

Published 18 March 2011

University of Brighton student Luqman Dawud is raising funds for UNICEF in the Brighton Marathon – and the sponsor who guesses his running time will win a meal for two at Jamie Oliver's Italian restaurant.

Luqman, a final-year pharmacy student, said: "We all have loved ones that we care for and what attracts me to the work of UNICEF is that they run a lot of campaigns and programmes for children and adults who are not currently in a position to care for themselves sufficiently.

"Money donated will go towards preventing transmission of AIDS from mother-to-child, victims of the Pakistan floods and the Haiti appeal."

Luqman, a Student Union staff member and who works in the university's telephone fundraising team, has so far received pledges totally £537 towards his goal of £1,000.

President of the UNICEF On Campus society, Orode Aniejurengho, said: "Students and staff have been very supportive of our efforts to support UNICEF and to promote child rights and alleviate poverty in developing and underdeveloped countries.

"We hope everyone will support Luqman and we are very grateful to everyone who recognises the need to aid UNICEF in their vital and urgent work."

Sponsors pledging £2 or more direct to Luqman can guess his running time on marathon day, April 10, to have a chance to win a meal for two at Jamie's Italian in The Lanes.
