New help points installed
Published 13 October 2011
Telephone help points have been installed in the university as part of a project aimed at giving students, staff and visitors free access to a range of services.
The new Infopoints connect to six organisations – taxis, National Traveline (bus & train information), NHS Direct, the drugs advice service FRANK, The Samaritans and 999 emergency services. They are free and simple to use – just pick up the handset, select a service, press a button and you are connected free of charge.
The project has been funded by Brighton and Hove Streamline Taxis which has sponsored a total of 16 Infopoints across the university estate in Brighton – in Moulsecoomb Place, Ringmer House, Watts Building, Westlain House, Mithras House, Mayfield House, Huxley Building, Ashdown House, Checkland Building, Cockcroft Building and Grand Parade, as well as Phoenix Halls main reception and accommodation blocks
Dave Smith, of Brighton and Hove Streamline Taxis, said: “As a company we have always worked hard to give students a safe and reliable service and we saw this as an opportunity not only to provide them with a link to us but also to other valuable services that they might need during their time at university.”
The project was managed by the university’s Telecoms Manager, John Lewis, and Infopoint, the equipment providers, based in Cambridge. John said: “The help points provide a valuable service to students, staff and visitors to the university. They have been strategically placed in prominent areas to allow easy access, and with each listed service being provided free of charge, they offer real benefit to the caller. All parties involved in providing this service have worked well together and I thank Brighton & Hove Streamline Taxis and Infopoint for their ongoing commitment to the project.”
