C Gull creator flies high

The creator of a cartoon seagull Professor C Gull has been awarded a top honour from the University of Brighton.
Chris Riddell, illustrator, writer of children's books and newspaper cartoonist, received the university's Alumnus Award 2013 during winter graduation ceremonies at the Brighton Dome (7-8 Feb).
Chris, who graduated from the university in 1984 with a degree in graphic design, created Professor C Gull as a figurehead for the university's Widening Participation drive to encourage people from less traditional backgrounds to take up university studies. He visited local schoolchildren to support the project.
The Alumnus Award was established to recognise the outstanding professional, personal or social achievements of the university’s former students.
Chris told the Dome audience: "It is great if Professor C Gull inspires kids to spread their wings."
