University celebrates charity work of students

Published 1 March 2013

University of Brighton Vice-Chancellor Professor Julian Crampton and the CEO of an international development charity have come together to recognise the hard work of a group of university students who are preparing to scale Africa's tallest mountain and cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia - all for charity.

This summer, 25 University of Brighton students will take part in a Challenge Event to help raise money for children's charity Childreach International. The Challenge Event will see students climb Kilimanjaro or cycle across South East Asia, and along the way, visit a sustainable grass roots project that they have helped fund.

So far, the team has raised over £19,000 and members are aiming for a grand total of £56,000. This is not the first time the university has worked with Childreach International; the partnership has been in existence for two years now, with Brighton's Raise and Give Society raising £39,000 for the charity to date.

Firoz Patel, Chief Executive Officer of Childreach International, visited the university to present a certificate of thanks for monies raised. He said: "We are truly grateful and humbled by the continuous support and dedication of the students. Their hard work and commitment is helping improving the lives of thousands of children in the developing access, providing them with access to education and healthcare."

Holly Kavanagh, student fundraiser and Students' Union Vice President (activities), said: "It's just brilliant tackling these challenges and we all feel privileged to be taking them on for such a fantastic charity"

Professor Julian Crampton, the university's Vice-Chancellor, said: "The students have worked extremely hard and have raised an impressive amount of money. The latest challenge will, I am sure, provide additional funds to Childreach International which does such good work in helping young people in the developing world."
