Small is beautiful
Students chose the unusual venue of a Hove seafront beach hut to show their work in an exhibition which featured jewellery, ceramics and lighting.
The idea for The Small Exhibition grew from a professional practice brief given to the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts Design and Craft BA(Hons) students, which asked them to ‘create a marketing and pricing proposal for a public exhibition or event featuring their own work’.
The seven students, Holly Alexander, Lennie Beare-Gotterson, Beci Callow, Rosie Clayden, Clare Evans, Vicky Litchfield and Alex Patterson, decided that, rather than create a virtual online exhibition, which is often a popular choice, they would take their work out to, and engage face-to-face with, the local community.
Despite being held on what proved one of the coldest weekends of the winter, the exhibition attracted more than 100 visitors.
One student said: “This was a fantastic experience and it was so good to be able to speak to the public direct about the work we are making on our course and to get feedback about it.”
The work included a table of interactive objects, lighting made from discarded copper plumbing pieces, miniature pots and pans, and brooches made from nets and rope from Brighton fishermen.
Lecturer, Alma Boyes, said: “We were delighted to see how professionally the students presented their work and the huge amount they learnt from communicating their work to the public.”
Professional practice is a key aspect of the Design and Craft course that enables students to place their work within a broad range of professional contexts. The course is taught by a team of acclaimed designers, applied artists and makers whose leading research and collective professional experience places students at the cutting edge of contemporary creative industry.
