Message from the Vice-Chancellor:
The University of Brighton's corporate plan for the period 2007-12 was published in May 2007, following full consultation with students, staff and key stakeholders. I would like to thank all of those who have contributed to this process; and also to our staff, students and friends who over time have laid the foundations on which this university has been built and which provide the basis for a strong and ambitious future.
As I say in the introduction to the plan, Brighton is a university that is committed to:
- delivering socially purposeful higher education that serves and strengthens society and underpins the economy; contributes critically to the public good; enriches those who participate; and equips our graduates to contribute effectively as citizens to their chosen professions and communities, locally, nationally and internationally
- developing a creative and energetic institution with a knowledge base of national and international quality, fully committed to mutual engagement with its local communities and economy alongside an international reputation for the quality and impact of its work
- finding creative and effective ways in which to strengthen the relationship between learning and teaching, disciplinary and professional practice, research and economic and social engagement
The plan further makes clear that we start the period of this new corporate plan a mature, self confident and self-critical academic community with a track record of creating and responding to opportunities for development; of working with others to realise shared objectives; of nurturing the individual ambitions of its staff and students, and of doing what we say we will do.
By 2012 we will be a university which has significantly strengthened its work and reputation across the range of teaching and learning, research and economic and social engagement activities; in which resources decisions are evidence based and strategic; and in which people and the quality of relationships matter and are managed with due care.
I encourage you to read the attached document which presents in some detail our values and aims for the period 2007-12; our distinguishing features and key challenges in achieving each of these aims; our objectives and indicators of success; and finally but very importantly how we will hold ourselves accountable.
I hope that you will enjoy finding out more about the work and direction of the University of Brighton.
Professor Julian Crampton
Vice-Chancellor
