    The course is taught in four interrelated modules - subject language study, comprehension skills, speaking skills and writing skills - each catering for a wide variety of individual needs. All feature teaching in the subject language, familiarity with the relevant culture and current affairs, and emphasise learner-directed activities.

    Course structure

    Students attend a two-hour class per week over two or three years depending on which level that they begin the course.

    Areas of study

    Comprehension Skills develops speed, accuracy and confidence when dealing with authentic listening and reading materials. Likely topics include the relevant business environment, the current political scene, sport and entertainment. Speaking Skills increases confidence when speaking the language in a variety of situations, improving oral fluency, range of expression, pronunciation, intonation, spontaneity and accuracy. Writing Skills develops written style for specific and general purposes.

    A-levels:
    A-level in relevant language.

    International Baccalaureate:
    individual assessment.

    QAA-approved access course:
    acceptable; subject specific units.

    GCSE (minimum grade C):
    a good profile.

    For non-native speakers of English:
    IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing.

    Other:
    Institute of Linguists stage 2, or resident period abroad. Year 1: AS-level (or equivalent) or a merit in the University of Brighton Certificate Intermediate Level, at the discretion of the school. Year 2: competence in the language equivalent to A-level. Year 3: normally only available to students who have satisfactorily completed the second year of the diploma. In exceptional circumstances students may be admitted direct to year 3 subject to assessment.

  • Fees and costs

    The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2012-13. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study.

    The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take. Different rules apply to research degrees - please contact the Doctoral College for advice.
