Business Management with Finance BSc(Hons)

• Overview

  Financial expertise is key to business success and companies are increasingly looking for business graduates who are not only numerate, but can use financial knowledge to help inform business decisions.

  Underpinned by a sound knowledge of business and management disciplines, this course will provide you with highly sought after financial skills and knowledge. Recent graduates have joined companies such as American Express, Hewlett Packard, Nike Plc, London Stock Exchange, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Credit Suisse, Warburg Dillon Read, Legal & General and Investec Asset Management.

  A key feature of the course is the work placement year. Work placements significantly add to your CV and many students return for their final year with firm job offers.   Course structure

  The course is delivered through seminars, lectures, workshops and tutorials. Assessment is through coursework assignments and exams. In the third year, you will have the opportunity of carrying out a work placement matching an area of personal interest.

  Areas of study

  Year 1 provides a general business background. You will study economics, finance, marketing and human resources. You will also work on academic skills such as research and analysis, and business skills including communication, time management, IT and problem-solving.

  Expanding your business knowledge and skills is the aim of the second year. The finance pathway allows you to focus on specialised topics.

  A key feature of the course is the work placement year. On placement you will gain work and life experience (and a salary). It significantly adds to your CV, there are plenty of networking opportunities and many students return to university for their final year with firm job offers. Placement companies include: American Express, The Bank of England, BMW, Bosch, Channel 4, Disney, Electronic Arts, Hewlett Packard, Home Office, IBM, Ipsos Mori, ITV, lastminute.com, Lloyds Banking Group and Microsoft.

• Entry requirements

  Typical entry requirements

  A-levels:
  ABB. Applicants with only two full A-levels or a double award will be considered on an individual basis. Excludes General Studies.

  ND/C (Level 3):
  DDM.

  International Baccalaureate:
  32 points including 16 at Higher level.

  QAA-approved access course:
  acceptable, subject-specific units.

  GCSE (minimum grade C):
  at least three subjects including English language and mathematics.

  Foundation degree/HND
  direct entry to year 2 may be possible with relevant subjects. HNC may also count towards direct entry.

  For non-native speakers of English:
  IELTS 6.0, with 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in the other elements.

• Fees and costs

  The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2012-13. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study.

  The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take. Different rules apply to research degrees - please contact the Doctoral College for advice.

  Mainza Sikabanga, Business Management with Finance BSc(Hons)

  I find this course particularly interesting because it takes a broad approach, looking at the functional areas of businesses as well as the dynamics of the economy in which they operate.

  The best thing about the University of Brighton is the commitment that the staff have to ensuring that students get the most out of their time at university. It’s a great feeling knowing that my tutors are committed to what they do and have a genuine interest in my studies and my personal development.

  My work placement is with Goldman Sachs. I am working in a financial reporting team within the Controllers Division. My responsibilities include reporting of the trading division’s performance, daily trading profit and loss reconciliation, financial packages preparation, enhancement of reporting processes and running ad hoc projects.

  I plan to pursue a career in finance with the ultimate goal of establishing my own company. My work placement is a huge stepping-stone because it is directly related to what I want to do thus giving me a profound insight into what to expect once I embark on my career.

  From what I am learning, I will be in a position to better prepare for a successful career. Having a year’s work experience will also put me at an advantage when I start applying for a graduate job as employers, now more than ever, want to recruit candidates with some work experience in addition to having a good degree.

  My advice to students thinking about taking a work placement is very simple: just do it! There is a lot to gain and nothing to lose.

  What I like best about my course is the accounting and the mathematics modules which are taught in the computer room, which I like because it is different from the normal classroom.

  When I came to Brighton I didn’t know exactly what to expect and the University helped me adapt to academic life. They have lots of workshops that can help you with academic writing and academic skills and that helped me a lot.

  I like Brighton because it is a very diverse city. You have the beach and the pier and there are lots of different things to do. The fun thing about Brighton is that it doesn’t matter what you like doing, you can find it somewhere. There is a good variety.

  The subject tutors are experts in their fields, most of which had prior and extensive experience in industry. It wasn’t just learning from books and study material, you could also leverage those experiences from the lecturers and tutors, proving really valuable when applying for placements and a job afterwards. It also helped in developing the placement project you carry out during the year-out.

  I was lucky enough to be surrounded by some great peers. We were able to learn a lot from each other, understanding group dynamics and giving each other the opportunity to coach and lead within group work. You can really take this experience and put it to good use both as examples of good leadership and teamwork in interviews, and then putting it to use in the work place.

  The placement year was a great opportunity. I was fortunate enough to get my foot in the door at Nike and have not looked back since. After a successful placement year, they offered me a permanent role after I graduated.

  Not only does the placement year give you really good technical experience, the exposure to people within the business and the chance to network was one that I really took and it paid off as it definitely helped me to get back in the company.

  I've been working at Nike for over a year and I’m still really enjoying it!
