Health Professions Research MPhil PhD

  • Overview

The Clinical Research Centre (CRC) for the Health Professions brings together research in the disciplines of occupational therapy, physiotherapy and podiatry; we also have a strand of osteopathic research. The centre is headed up by Professor Ann Moore Director of the Clinical Research Centre for Health Professions and the activities of the CRC are steered by the School of Health Professions Research Strategy Committee consisting of academic staff representing the three professions based within the School of Health Professions. The group plans research strategic developments, to develop collaborative work and foster links with outside agencies and other research centres within the university as well as planning grant applications.

Significant growth in our research performance has been demonstrated since the development of the CRC in 1994 culminating in 55% of our research activity being rated as internationally recognised or internationally excellent in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Currently over 50% of the academic staff are engaged in research activities which utilise a range of research approaches and methodologies within quantitative and qualitative paradigms. A particular strength of the Clinical Research Centre is its multidisciplinary approach to research drawing on parallels of multidisciplinary work undertaken in the clinical setting. We have well established links with other research centres in the university including sport science, pharmacy, nursing and midwifery and the Brighton & Sussex Medical School. We also have links externally with NHS Trusts, higher education institutions both nationally and internationally and industrial companies.

Research takes place within three major themes : Applied Clinical and Laboratory Based Research, which includes laboratory based research, musculoskeletal research in particular research relating to the spine, Osteopathic research and research that involves posture and mobility. Our second research group is: The Wellbeing, Health and Occupation Research Group, which focuses on creativity in health, healthy aging and occupational science. Our third group is the Applied Pedagogic Research Group which focuses on: teaching and learning experiences, work based learning, patient education and problem based learning.

We have dedicated technical support and heavy investment in information technology and state of the art research tools. Out laboratory bases equipment includes the Vicon system, CODA system, Biodex Isokinetic dynamometer, Musgrave footprint, video, video digitising system, balance performance monitor, video digitising system, balance performance monitor, ultrasound imaging and 8 channel logger EMG facility, we also have a Metamax for respiratory function analysis. All housed in a purpose-built laboratory which provides an excellent environment for human movement and functional analysis.

In addition to the academic staff of the School of Health Professions the Clinical Research Centre employs a reader, five research fellows, five research officers and two administrators. Currently there are 23 PhD 15 Doctoral students. Regular workshops, presentations, seminars and meetings between staff and student ensure a lively enthusiastic and friendly research culture.

The Clinical Research Centre has until recently been the host organisation of the National Council for Osteopathic Research and is the host organisation for the Allied Health Professions Research Network.
