    The International Management MSc develops a broad knowledge of global management, strengthens your capacity for geographical and cultural mobility, and improves your ability to work as part of a multinational team.

    At the end of your year of study in Brighton, you will continue for an additional three months at a top business school in France, Italy, Germany or the USA. Studying abroad is a great way to develop a wider view of international management, as was well as strengthening your ability to operate effectively outside of your home country.

    Some of our partner business schools allow you to apply to continue your study for an extra semester. This extended study may lead to a second Masters degree.

    Practical experience is central to the course. You will have opportunities to:
    - gain work experience (and a salary) through an employment-based project

    - develop consultancy skills during consultancy skills workshops
    - use specialised diagnostic and management development tools
    - join a tutor-led study visit to another European country.

    This course attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities, providing further enrichment to the learning process and enabling you to develop cross-cultural skills and future business networks.

  • Course content

    Course structure

    The course runs from the end of September to early June. There are normally 14-18 hours of classes each week, plus 25-30 hours of group project work, guided and independent study.

    Special intensive workshops on topics such as consultancy skills, management careers and research methods take place during the year and there is a one-week, tutor-led study visit to mainland Europe in January or February. During the summer, work continues on the supervised management project report.

    International studies begin in August or September, depending upon the calendar of the host institution. International studies normally end by early or mid-December, which is the deadline final project reports.

    We use a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, workshops, case studies, guest speakers and team working.

    In addition to knowledge of the major management functions, such as international marketing, accounting, organisational behaviour and international strategy, the course includes transferable skills of management including international leadership, international consultancy and cross-cultural negotiation.

    Normally a good bachelor degree or equivalent is required. A degree in any subject will be considered. Work experience is useful but not essential.

    This degree will prepare you for a wide range of careers, including international management, international consultancy and some areas of functional management. It is also valuable if you are interested in starting an international business, or pursuing a career such as international business negotiator, commercial interpreter, lecturer or researcher.

    During the course you will have opportunities to meet international company recruiters and to complete a plan for your future career.

    To help you find a job, you will be offered training in how to improve your resume and achieve success at job interviews.

    Our placements team will be able to help you find practical work experience during the course.

    If you are interested in pursuing a career in research, the research skills training and experience may be used to develop a proposal for a subsequent research degree or for published papers.

  • Fees and costs

    The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2012-13. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study.

    The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take. Different rules apply to research degrees - please contact the Doctoral College for advice.

    Partner schools

    Studying abroad is a great way to develop a wider view of international management, as was well as strengthening your ability to operate effectively outside of your home country. We have partner colleges in France, Italy, Germany and the USA.

    During your semester abroad you will produce a report on an international business or management topic that interests you, a guide to others entering and living in the host culture, and a critical reflection on the management learning from the experience.

    Most classes are taught in English, but you may undertake language preparation during the summer prior to your international study. Partner schools include:

    France

    École de Management, Grenoble

    Founded in 1984, Grenoble École de Management is one of the elite Grandes Écoles (literally in French 'great schools') of France. Known as the ‘capital of the Alps’ Grenoble is a major scientific centre of Europe. It is located in the south east of France, close to some of the best skiing in Europe and less than 3 hours drive from the Mediterranean. Classes are taught in English, with optional French language classes available.

    Italy

    Scuola di Amministrazione Aziendale, University of Turin

    Scuola di Amministrazione Aziendale (SAA) is part of the University of Turin, one of the oldest universities in Italy. It is one of only three technical universities in Italy specialising in higher technical and management education.  Turin is a cosmopolitan city of business and culture, famous for its many art galleries, restaurants, opera houses, museums and piazzas, and for its rococo, neo-classical, baroque, and Art Nouveau architecture. Students from Brighton will be taught in English. Optional Italian language classes are available.

    Germany

    Pforzheim University

    Pforzheim University was the home of the first German MBA programme and is one of the most selective schools in Germany. The school enjoys close partnerships with some of Germany’s top companies. Pforzheim has an enviable location on the edge of the Black Forest in the south west of Germany close to Stuttgart, home of major German companies such as Mercedes Benz and Bosch. Students from Brighton are taught in English. There are also classes taught in German available.

    USA

    La Salle University, Philadelphia

    La Salle is a private university located 6 miles from the centre of the historical city of Philadelphia, America’s 5th largest city about 2 hours by train from New York and Washington DC. The Business School is highly ranked in the USA and accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

    Grand Valley State University, Michigan

    Grand Valley State University is a major public university located in Grand Rapids, Michigan’s second largest city. Your classes will be taught at the modern Pew campus located in the city centre. The city is famous for its furniture manufacturing and for heath care related industries. Grand Rapids is located about 45 minutes drive from the beaches of Lake Michigan and about 3 hours by train or car from Chicago. Studies at Grand Valley will offer insight into Middle American culture and management.

    California State University, Los Angeles

    California State University (CSUN) is a public university, part of the California State University system. It is located in the community of Northridge within the city of Los Angeles. CSUN is located on a modern, beautifully landscaped campus with excellent facilities for its 34,000 students. Los Angeles is one of the largest and most multi-cultural cities in the USA. The campus is a short drive to Hollywood and to the famous sandy beaches of Santa Monica Bay.

    University of California, Berkeley

    The University of California at Berkeley is one of the most famous universities in the world. It is the oldest of the ten campuses of the University of California, established in 1868. Berkeley has a distinguished reputation as a research university, having 66 Nobel prizes awarded to its faculty, alumni and researchers. The beautiful Berkeley campus is located a short distance by public transportation from San Francisco, one of the most attractive cities in the USA.  

    Brighton students have an opportunity to sample the Berkeley experience by attending summer school courses. On completion of the summer school you will be awarded Brighton's International Management MSc.

    Research project

    The research project offers the opportunity for studies that reflect your interests and career goals. Research projects are supervised by highly experienced applied management specialists. Recent topics include:

    Work experience-based research project

    As an alternative to the desk-based research project you can apply for a work placement. During your placement you will gain practical experience of working in industry, earn a salary and undertake a work-based project.

    Work experience normally starts at the end of the taught masters between July and September and lasts between 4 and 6 months, depending on the nature of the placement.

    The Business School's placements team will help you find a work placement and advise on writing your CV, filling out application forms and interview techniques. A personal academic supervisor will be allocated to support you in developing your research project. When possible the supervisor will visit you at your place of employment.
