This course will develop the skills and knowledge needed to progress to senior management. It will increase your job security, your career prospects and your earning potential.
This is a dual award, offering both a management accreditation from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), as well as a postgraduate qualification from the University of Brighton. On graduation you will receive:
- a CMI Diploma in Managment and Leadership (Level 5)
- a Graduate Certificate in Management from the University of Brighton.
You will learn about the latest business models and techniques that are directly relevant to your workplace. Work-based projects address the needs of your organisation and provide value for sponsoring employers.
The course is delivered through a combination of lectures and practical workshops. Students are expected to attend 20 afternoon sessions throughout the academic year.
The CMI Diploma in Management and Leadership will appeal to:
- first-level team managers or supervisors
- those aspiring to a first-level management role
- senior specialists, eg social workers or medical specialists
- professionals with a view to accrediting existing skills or progressing to further qualifications.

Course structure
The CMI Diploma in Management and Leadership (Level 5) is delivered through a combination of lectures and practical workshops.
Students are expected to attend 20 sessions throughout the academic year. Each session runs for 6 hours, from 12.00pm to 6.00pm.
You will be supported by a network of peers which has significant benefits for sharing ideas, concepts and workplace experiences.
The course offers:
- weekly workshops incorporating small group exercises
- assessment by mainly work related assignments
- an emphasis on practical application and skills development
- tutorial support.
With a strong emphasis on practical skills and their application, as well as personal and professional development, the course aims above all to provide a supportive and stimulating learning environment.
Syllabus
The CMI Diploma covers a wide range of management functions, broken down into nine modules:
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AS A MANAGER AND LEADER
This module develops individual management and leadership skills and competencies against objectives. You will learn to:
- assess and plan for personal professional development
- plan for the resources required for personal professional development
- implement and evaluate the personal development plan
- promote healthy and safe working practices
INFORMATION-BASED DECISION MAKING
This module is about the communication and use of information to support decision making. You will learn to:
- identify and select sources of data and information
- analyse and present information to support decision making
- communicate the results of information analysis and decisions
PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT
This module is about the management of individual and team performance. You will learn to:
- identify and agree performance objectives
- assess performance and provide feedback
- understand performance support for improvement
- understand and apply the organisation's disciplinary and grievance procedures
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
This module is about identifying, planning, using and evaluating resources to meet objectives. You will learn to:
- identify and plan resources needed to meet objectives
- select and use the resource supply chain to meet planned objectives
- monitor and evaluate internal and external resource use to meet plans
MEETING STAKEHOLDER AND QUALITY NEEDS
This module is about meeting stakeholder requirements to agreed quality standards and seeking improvements. You will learn to:
- identify stakeholders and their requirements
- apply and improve quality standards
- promote continuous improvement and change
MARKETING PLANNING
This module is about understanding the role of marketing, the organisation?s current market position and planning for widening markets. You will learn to:
- understand the meaning and role of marketing in achievement of organisational objectives
- identify the organisation's current and future position in the sectors or markets in which it operates
- devise and implement a marketing plan that contributes to achievement of organisational objectives
MANAGING RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION
This module is about identifying a need for staff, selecting objectively and inducting effectively within legal and organisational requirements. You will learn to:
- explain the impact of both the law and organisational procedures on the process of recruitment and selection
- identify personnel requirements and present a reasoned case for changes in staffing resources
- organise and conduct a selection process, justify a decision and keep necessary records
LEADERSHIP PRACTICE
This module is about the links between management and leadership, key leadership principles and leadership theory. You will learn to:
- understand the links and differences between management and leadership
- understand leadership principles that support organisational values
- understand and apply leadership strategies to organisational objectives
CONDUCTING A MANAGEMENT PROJECT
This module is about identifying, researching and producing a work-related project and evaluating its impact. You will learn to:
- identify and justify a management project
- conduct research using sources and analyse data and options
- make conclusions and recommendations that achieve the project aim
- show and review the results of the project
Completion of this course will enhance your career prospects and improve your potential performance as a manager. It demonstrates your professional credibility to employers, clients and peers. CMI qualifications are nationally and internationally recognised.
A Level 5 CMI Diploma is a big step towards achieving CMI Chartered Manager status. Chartered Manager is the highest status that can be achieved in the managerial profession. (Chartered Manager status requires a formal application process to CMI.)
Graduating with dual awards - both a CMI Diploma and a Graduate Certificate in Management - offers the prestige of both university and professional body qualifications.

Having a professional qualification as well as an academic qualification makes a powerful statement about your standards and determination to develop your management skills.
While studying for your Diploma you will be entitled to free affiliate-level CMI membership.
Our Careers Service offers information, advice and guidance. They can help identify the skills CMI students need and demonstrate how to develop those skills.

CMI students can also sign up for the Careers Service's Employability Skills Programme - a series of advice sessions designed to help develop career plans and improve employability skills.
The beepurple entrepreneurship network is ideal for CMI students who are interested in developing their business ideas. By joining beepurple, students will gain key business skills and entrepreneurial attitudes at free workshops.
The Careers Service has resources to help CMI students find new employment opportunities. Our vacancy service is in regular contact with over 1,800 employers who post vacancies and attend our careers fairs.

Brighton’s CMI Diploma gave me a great overview of all aspects of management and gave me the confidence and knowledge to manage change within my own environment effectively. It has also given me a broader understanding of theories which we apply throughout our business.
I would advise those considering taking the CMI Diploma to put your heart into it and you will get so much back. The tutors are fantastic and the learning environment is so positive that you will really get a buzz from learning.
