    About the course

    This flexible course is designed for people working with adult learners in colleges, further and adult education institutions. The programme will develop your professional skills, knowledge and understanding of further and adult education. This course will also be relevant for you if you work in further and adult education development and training.

    You will relate studies to your professional experience and explore direct references to recent policy and research. Your confidence and effectiveness when working with adult learners will increase, and provide the opportunity for career progression.

    The flexible provision at level 4 (usually up to 18 months) will enable you to build on existing higher education credit (including those holding the Post-Compulsory Education certificate in education) and you will work at your own pace towards the foundation degree.

    Course-based provision continues at level 5 (18 months) and is a combination of regular attendance at university plus on-the-job work-related tasks and assignments.

    Applicants will need access to a computer with word processing facilities and the internet.

    Degree and/or experience:
    Students will need to working in an educational or professional development context, where the primary focus of their work is on adult learning. They will need to be able to demonstrate their capacity to study at higher education. A flexible approach to considering relevant qualifications and experience is taken.

  • Course content

    Course structure

    There are two routes for the first half (level 4) of the course
    (a) an individual programme of work-related learning and freestanding modules; or
    (b) through gaining the CertEd Post-Compulsory Education, the part-time qualification route to teaching in further education.

    For the second half of the course (level 5), attendance at the University's Falmer campus for lectures, workshops and seminars is part-time, usually one evening a week during term time, plus occasional Saturdays.

  • Fees and costs

    The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2013-14. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.

    The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

    What's included in the fee?

    When costs such as health or criminal record checks, field trips or use of specialist materials are incurred as a mandatory requirement of the course they are included in your tuition fee.

    You may incur additional costs depending on the optional modules or activities you choose. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees.     Our Falmer campus is located on the edge of the South Downs National Park on the outskirts of Brighton. Approximately 7,000 students are based here.

    Arts

    The highlight of the city’s cultural year is the Brighton Festival. The event is held each May and is England’s biggest arts festival, which showcases arts and performance from around the world. Brighton is also home to the UK’s oldest working cinema, the Duke of York’s, which shows alternative and mainstream films. The city is also well known for its exciting music scene and hosts The Great Escape music festival.

    Whether you take your sport seriously or just want to keep fit, Brighton offers all kinds of sports opportunities and facilities, on and off campus. You can also make the most of the location, and play volleyball, basketball and windsurfing down by the beach. The seafront is also the finishing point for the famous London – Brighton bicycle ride and the quirky veteran car run.

  • Career opportunities

    This course will increase your understanding of further and adult education and could provide the opportunity for career progression.

    Graduates may also continue their studies, by progressing to an honours degree.
