About the course
Clinical anaesthesia and perioperative medicine is a large and constantly developing area of medicine encompassing many different clinical areas. There is a particular focus within the specialty on providing safe care in a wider clinical context, in particular for patients in emergency situations and also those with multiple co-morbidities who present for treatment with increasing frequency. This course allows trainees to study beyond the training curriculum and exam syllabus to ensure that they have the understanding and skills to lead developments in the specialty in the future. They will explore cutting-edge areas of patient care using an evidence-based approach to provide knowledge of clinical practice which extends beyond the scope of the training programme and represents many of the most important areas of development for clinical anaesthesia.
Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is designed for doctors who have completed two years of anaesthetic training and is based in areas that are universally relevant to clinical practice in acute settings. In addition there are modules which enable students to gain an understanding in many of the important non-clinical areas which are essential for leadership in the NHS. The course is largely based at the University of Brighton and Princess Royal Hospital which offer access for trainees in south-east England and further afield and allows close links to the regional teaching hospital, ensuring appropriate clinical focus. Anaesthesia is becoming a highly competitive field and trainees are increasingly looking to gain postgraduate qualifications that will enhance their professional development and demonstrate their academic abilities. This course offers a unique opportunity to achieve these aims.
The course provides a strong platform for professional development and enhanced career progression. It also opens opportunities for research at MSc, PhD and MPhil level.
We are currently offering this course with postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma options (masters level). Consideration is being given to offering a full MSc at a future stage.

Applications are welcomed from international students with appropriate qualifications and experience.Claims for the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) will be considered.

medical degree plus a minimum two years experience in anaesthesia. Students are normally expected to be in clinical practice throughout the course. -
Course content
Course structure
The course provides advanced professional education for anaesthetists and comprises six training modules which form the basis for 120 taught credits. The goal is to train students to be high achieving consultants and clinical leaders of the future by providing tuition in both clinical practice and also the key professional domains of research, leadership, and communication and learning along with the development of research and publishing skills.
This course emphasises the developing nature of anaesthesia with particular reference to the area of perioperative medicine. This is reflected in the course content which covers areas at the forefront of developments in health care practice and service provision. It moves beyond the traditional theatre-based model of anaesthetic practice and introduces key advances in clinical care and the developing role of the anaesthetist. The clinical areas covered include many important areas of development in anaesthetic practice which will be increasingly incorporated into services in the future.
Each module is normally delivered over five days. The modules are taught over a two-year period (three in each year). Teaching methods include lectures, group discussion and student presentations. Preparation time is required for each module including the necessary reading. Each module is assessed by a 3,000-word essay. For the clinical modules this will take the form of case reports enabling students to reflect on how the course material fits into everyday clinical practice.
Areas of study
This course has been set up with the ultimate aim of improving the quality of care for NHS patients. This is achieved in three main ways. Firstly, detailed tuition in key areas of clinical patient care at a level beyond the anaesthetic training curriculum is provided. The subjects covered in the clinical modules directly facilitate learning in key areas of patient management, many of which are at the forefront of developments in patient care. This enables students to develop a greater understanding in these areas, enhancing their clinical practice and encouraging them to develop further expertise.
Secondly, the course allows students to develop their expertise in critical appraisal and evidence-based practice, and enabling them to develop skills which will enhance their clinical practice in all areas. This will be of considerable benefit to students not just during their time in training but also throughout their future consultant careers. The principles of continuing professional development and evidence-based medicine are enshrined within the core values of the NHS and the ability to use information from medical literature appropriately to enhance the quality of personal clinical practice is of great benefit to both doctors and patients.
Finally, the course will also provide students with a greater understanding of the structure and processes of the NHS and tuition in many of the professional domains that they will need to develop to act as leaders, educators and developers within the context of NHS work at the highest levels. The course content has been carefully considered to reflect the needs of NHS trusts when recruiting consultant staff and also the wider priorities of the NHS in developing clinical leadership, service development and education. This is particularly evident in the generic professional modules but also applies to the clinical modules featuring the areas of service design and development within their content.
Students will enhance their knowledge and abilities in each of these areas, enabling them to develop successful careers and ensuring that they have the skills to provide high quality care, both directly and indirectly through roles in education, leadership and management.

Fees and costs
The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2013-14. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.
The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.
