This course is accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Graduates will be exempt from some of the foundation level exams set by these professional bodies.

About the course

Business professionals need a clear understanding of the economic environment in which firms operate. This course equips you with the skills and knowledge necessary to relate economic factors to real world issues that influence business.

You will learn how to:
- apply economic techniques to the strategic business planning process
- use economic theory to assess market conditions
- critically appraise different business strategies.

A distinctive feature of the course is the workplacement year. On placement you gain workand life experience. It significantly adds to your CV and many students return to university fortheir final year with firm job offers.

Practical and personal skills development is central to this course. You will develop expertise in project management, report writing, time management, presenting, budgeting, team working, flexibility and leadership.

Business Management with Economics is ideal for students wishing to study an economics course without a highly mathematical aspect to it.

This degree is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). All students who have taken a work placement will graduate with dual awards - both a BSc and a CMI Diploma in Management and Leadership. Having a CMI Diploma as well as a BSc from Brighton will help you stand out to employers.

International Baccalaureate:
34 points including 16 at Higher level.

Access to HE Diploma
pass (at least 45 credits at level 3), with 30 credits at merit or above. Units in accounting and finance, business or management required.

GCSE (minimum grade C) or Access Equivalent
at least three subjects including English language and mathematics or a science.

Foundation degree/HND
may enable you to start the course in year 2. Relevant subjects required. HNC may also count towards direct entry.

For non-native speakers of English:
IELTS 6.0, with 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in the other elements.

Course content

Course structure

Year 1 provides a general business background. You will study subjects such as economics, finance, marketing and human resources. You will also work on academic skills such as research and analysis, and business skills such as communication, time management, IT and problem-solving.
Expanding your business knowledge and skills is the aim of the second year. The economics pathway allows you to focus on specialised topics.
A distinctive feature of the course is the work placement year. On placement you gain work and life experience. It significantly adds to your CV and many students return to university for their final year with firm job offers. Placement companies include American Express, BMW, Bosch, Channel 4, Disney, Electronic Arts, Hewlett Packard, Home Office, IBM, Ipsos Mori and Microsoft.
In your final year you will be able to choose from a wide range of options, enabling you to tailor the course to suit your career aspirations.
Classes are interactive with a wide variety of activities, such as presentations, designing marketing plans, case studies, decision making scenarios and lively discussions.

Fees and costs

The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2013-14. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.

The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

What's included in the fee?

When costs such as health or criminal record checks, field trips or use of specialist materials are incurred as a mandatory requirement of the course they are included in your tuition fee.

You may incur additional costs depending on the optional modules or activities you choose. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. If you choose to take the professional placement (sandwich) year offered on this course you will pay a reduced fee during this year. Our fee for the professional placement year is currently £750 for Home and Island Students and £1,760 for International students. This fee may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.

Staff profiles

Julie Fowlie, Course Leader

Julie's professional background is in management development within the financial services sector, which involved facilitating change through objective analysis, team building and leadership.

She joined the University of Brighton in 1999 and is the Director of Business Programmes for undergraduate courses. Julie co-ordinates the Professional and Academic Skills Modules as well as teaching Managing People and Human Resource Management.

Her main academic interests are the emotional dimension of leadership including emotional intelligence and most recently combining this construct with social marketing.

In 2009 she co-authored How to Succeed at University, an essential guide to academic skills and personal development at university.
