    About the course

    Contemporary Crafts Practice at Sussex Coast College Hastings provides students with the opportunity to develop fresh, creative thinking through practical engagement with materials and processes. This is further supported by cultural and critical studies.

    Central to the course is personal and professional practice. This will enable you to place your work within a professional context and to gain the self-management and promotional skills necessary for employment within the creative industries.

    UCAS tariff:
    120 points, from a minimum of one 6-unit qualification in G/VCE Art and Design or BTEC National Awards in Art and Design. Level 3 Key Skills and General Studies excluded.

    BTEC:
    PPP.

    International Baccalaureate:
    Individual assessment.

    Access to HE diploma:
    acceptable; subject-specific units.

    GCSE (minimum grade C) or Access equivalent:
    at least three subjects including English language and mathematics or a science.

    For non-native speakers of English:
    IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing.

    Other:
    Accredited prior learning and/or experience.

  • Course content

    Course structure

    The beginning of the course involves a series of inductions into the workshops - ceramics, glass, metals and plastics. This progresses to more self-directed study allowing you to develop specialist areas of interest. Throughout, you are guided and supported by group debate, individual tutorial guidance and specialist seminars. There is also an organised study tour. Each year students' tours have included visits to Rome, Paris, Barcelona and New York.

    During year 2 you will gain work experience which may include time with local practitioners in ceramics, jewellery and metalwork, landscape design and stained glass restoration projects. In previous years students have worked with international ceramicists, in the UK and Belgium and with the Craft Council setting up the Collect exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, also Ceramic Art at the Royal College of Art in London.

    Areas of study

    Ceramics, glass, and metals can be studied, individually or in combination. Interdisciplinary practice like mould making, printing processes and computer-aided design link the specialisms, and allow for research across the four areas.

    Practical work is supported by practice-led research and cultural and critical studies that facilitate and inform developmental thinking within studio practice. Personal and professional practice runs throughout the course and the course provides practical guidance and experience to locate and promote your skills and work within a professional context.

  • Fees and costs

    The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2013-14. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.
