    Syllabus

    Phase one

The first phase of the MBA focuses on providing a sound foundation of management skills and knowledge. The aims of this phase are to develop your capability to analyse organisational operations and to identify how organisations can improve their operations in order to become more effective. These aims are achieved through two double modules:

The Organisation in its Environment addresses the relationship between the organisation and the ever changing external environment. You will study Organisational Behaviour and Management Environment and Economics.

Managing Performance develops the skills and disciplines used for measuring activity and performance, improving efficiency and formulating operational plans. You will study Accounting and Managing Business Processes.

    Phase two

Phase two focuses on the acquisition of professional management skills and knowledge. By the end of this phase you will have an understanding of the major management disciplines and an appreciation of strategic thinking. As with Phase one, the aims are achieved through two 30 point modules.

Managing Systems: People, Information and Knowledge you will study Information Systems Management and Human Resource Management. Both underpin the effective management of knowledge within organisations.

Planning and Marketing explores strategic direction within a general management context. Subjects studied will be Marketing Planning and Strategy and Business Strategy. A further aim of this phase is development of the capability to act as an organisational consultant and analyst. This is supported by workshops in Consultancy Skills and Research Methods.

    Phase three

The third phase aims to develop strategic capability and advanced research skills. The larger module, Developing Strategic Capability, contains the disciplines of Corporate Strategy, Financial Strategy and Organisational Dynamics and Change.

The other module in phase three is an elective module. The elective modules available will vary from year to year and will reflect the research expertise of staff as well as live issues in management. Modules on Quality management, E-Business, Supply chain management, Knowledge management, International business and Consultancy skills are likely to be available. The elective is an opportunity to carry out an individual research project in an area of interest.
