About the course
Our understanding of human biology underpins many of the important advances that have transformed the quality of human life. You will develop an in-depth understanding of how the human body functions in health, the processes that lead to disorders in cellular function and methods for disease detection and treatment.
Education is essential to the development of an informed society, widening opportunities and giving people choices on how they see the world. The education strand explores the philosophy and practice of education in both formal and informal contexts.
All lecturers on this course are research-active and are leaders in the field of human biology and education.

Course structure
The course is delivered through seminars and lectures. You will be assessed through coursework, exams, essays and presentations. In the second year, you will have the opportunity of carrying out a work placement matching an area of personal interest, which your tutor will help you to find.
Areas of study
The course encompasses human biology from cell and molecular to whole organism physiology and the mechanisms that lead to disease. The first year provides the basis for understanding cell and molecular biology and key biology skills. In the second year you will study microbiology and advanced human physiology. The third year focuses on the cellular and molecular basis of disease, specialist topics in human health and disease, and will enable you to develop key professional skills.
In the education strand, you will explore the systems that provide the framework for education today and how government ideology and policies shape this.
You will examine the ways in which formal education settings address inclusion, and look at education comparatively, both within the UK and internationally.
