    About the course

The Centre for Research in Innovation Management (CENTRIM), part of the Brighton Business School, has a strong tradition in collaborative research with other universities, large international organisations and governments as well as local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Centre provides opportunities for suitably qualified and motivated people to study for a research degree (MPhil or PhD) on either a full or part-time basis in the area of technology and innovation management.

We believe there are three strong reasons why you might choose to register for a PhD or MPhil degree in CENTRIM:

We are experts in technology and innovation management
The Centre is more than twenty years old and has around twenty specialised research staff, most of whom are actively researching and publishing on a full-time basis. CENTRIM's research projects are funded from many sources, including UK and foreign governments, the European Union and the UK research councils.

We hold a 3a rating from the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and are recognised by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) for our quality processes, research environment and a completion rate appropriate for supporting full and part-time PhD researchers in the field of science, technology and innovation studies.

We provide a unique practical research environment
CENTRIM specialises in passing from research to practice and back again. We manage this mix in our own projects and in collaborations with firms and policy organisations. We recruit students from a mix of backgrounds in academic, industrial and policy work. The hands-on ethos and skills are part of what we hope to impart to students, and to embody in their training and personal development as researchers.

We offer focused personal development and high-quality research outcomes
We support students through personal development trajectories to relevant professional outcomes. These may sometimes differ from a traditional PhD leading to an academic career. We work with part-time researchers from industry or government who hold management jobs and seek to achieve practical gains for their organisations. We also support PhD students with successful careers behind them who see research skills and academic publication as a path to further personal satisfaction and professional rewards.

Examples of our recent research degree projects include: incorporating cultural sensitivity into IT system development methodologies; management of new product development in small Irish electronics firms; capability building in small firms through participation in a learning network; the changing role of management in the development of agile manufacturing organisations; biotechnology diffusion in Portugal - towards a socio-cognitive-based approach; virtual team-working and knowledge management in complex product systems; supplier involvement in complex product systems (CoPS) manufacturing; the innovative response to competitive pressures of emerging economy firms - a comparative study of automotive component suppliers; debugging innovation - how engineers innovate when they debug high-technology products; the dynamic network of buyers and suppliers; introducing project and risk management procedures into project-based SMEs.

We link student PhD projects with ongoing work in CENTRIM and accept students only on the basis that their work aligns with the Centre's research programme areas. In this way, we ensure a team context for hands-on learning, support through apprenticeship and mentoring, and a focus on live outcomes in the innovation field.
