    About the course

    This 12-month programme is aimed at those students who hold an HND, FdA or DipHE in travel and tourism management (or similar) and who wish to obtain an honours degree. The course provides a unique opportunity to join the first degree course in the UK to focus purely on the international travel industry. This course is now one of the most established and internationally recognised available and has a strong international theme, addressing current industry issues within a global context. Tutors have substantial travel industry experience and the course is supported by continuous cooperation with organisations from the travel industry including the Civil Aviation Authority, Air Miles, tour operators and airlines

  • Course content

    Course structure

    The degree is taught by staff with practical, research and professional experience in international travel management and students experience a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops and group activities. They can expect to be in the classroom for approximately 12-15 hours a week but personal research is also required in order to further support your studies. Progress is assessed using a variety of individual and group tasks and students are encouraged to take a critical and analytical approach throughout.

    Areas of study

    Depending on their areas of interest and specific entry qualifications, students are able to study a range of modules that build upon and enhance their previous studies and enable them to become familiar with the key issues involved in the strategic management of this dynamic and competitive industry. They also choose from a range of optional modules including travel marketing, etravel, cruise management and international management. To graduate with an honours degree students must also undertake a research-based dissertation.

  • Fees and costs

    The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2012-13. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.

    The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

    What's included in the fee?

    When costs such as health or criminal record checks, field trips or use of specialist materials are incurred as a mandatory requirement of the course they are included in your tuition fee.

    You may incur additional costs depending on the optional modules or activities you choose. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees.     Our Eastbourne campus is located at the foot of the South Downs National Park, about ten minutes walk from the seafront and 20 minutes from the pier and Eastbourne town centre. Almost 3,000 students are based here.

    Eastbourne’s buzzing university community and compact town gives it a laid back and friendly feel. The town combines the traditional seaside attractions with modern nightlife, a wide range of sporting activities and an exciting arts scene.

    Eastbourne has long been the home of pre-Wimbledon tennis tournaments at Devonshire Park. Eastbourne also hosts an extreme sports festival and the Beachy Head Marathon that takes place across the South Downs National Park.

    Graham Shephard

    Travel course leader 

    I come from an established travel industry background having worked in both tour operations and the leisure industry in past years. I studied my first degree in International Tourism Management at the University of Brighton and for my MSc in eTourism at the University of Surrey. 

    I joined the university as a lecturer in 1995. I am committed to maintaining links with the industry sectors of both travel and tourism and ensuring that these links continue to benefit both students and the courses available. 

    I, with other colleagues, organised the successful Travel Industry Forum in 2008 and have cooperated with the Institute of Travel and Tourism on industry liaison development. My research interests are in the sport and adventure tourism sectors, winter sports tourism, eTravel and the travel sectors.

  • Career opportunities

    Graduates are equipped with the skills necessary for employment in general management as well as more specific travel management. Graduates can expect to find employment in a wide range of travel companies in areas such as airlines, destination marketing, tour operations, resort management and travel consultancy.

    The academic nature of the degree provides the opportunity for good students to seek an academic career into postgraduate study on our MA courses or in research for a PhD or MPhil.
