    About the course

    This part-time masters course has been specially designed for professionals already in senior positions. It will enable you to develop new managerial skills, gain recognition for existing skills and improve the competitiveness of your organisation.

    The course has a strong emphasis on project work and self-directed learning. It aims to break down the barriers between learning at university and learning at work. The programme takes into account the high levels of skills and learning that are demonstrated every day in the workplace, and provides a framework to support and accredit this learning.

    This course is suitable for all senior professionals with a degree, a graduate certificate, membership of the Chartered Management Institute, or evidence of equivalent qualifications/occupational standards. It is important for participants to have the support of their employers, to enable them to make good use of the workplace-based opportunities for development.

    Completion of this masters programme is expected to take between one to three years, however, this will vary according to your personal circumstances and work commitments. Should you wish, you may exit early with the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Management Practice or a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Practice.

  • Course content

    Course structure

    The programme acknowledges that managers learn in a wide variety of ways, including short courses, mentoring and coaching, shadowing, project management and training. These types of learning are not normally accredited, however, this programme enables you to include workplace learning in your plans for flexible study.

    Modules will include learning packs with guided reading and may include blends of e-learning materials and distance learning elements. Workshops will focus on exploring important issues at each stage of the programme. There will be opportunities to participate in classroom-based learning at the university, particularly in the optional modules.

    Areas of study

    By the end of the programme you will have developed:

    - management skills at a professional level, including lifelong learning skills and personal development, enabling self-direction and originality in contributing to organisational objectives

    - the ability to apply your understanding of business and management to complex issues to improve organisational performance

    - an advanced understanding of organisations, their management and the changing external context in which they operate.

    Syllabus

    The course is structured to provide a progressive programme of management development. Modules can be studied flexibly and are designed to fit around your personal commitments and working environment.

    Stage 1

    - Planning Learning and Development
    Enables you to review your learning needs and plan how to develop and evaluate your knowledge, understanding and skills.

    - Managing in Context
    You will plan and carry out a project within your workplace that will make a contribution to your organisation and enable you to gain personal development and learning.

    - Plus one module of your choice.Options include: Consultancy Skills, Managing Talent, Global Marketing, New Product Development, and Branding and Marketing Communications

    Stage 2

    - Strategic Learning and Development
    This module develops your role as a strategic manager and leader, able to manage projects that contribute to your organisation's objectives.

    - Effective Management
    The aim of this module is to identify and carry out a project in your workplace, through which you can make a focused contribution to your organisation alongside planning and managing personal development.

    - Plus one module of your choice.Options include: Consultancy Skills, Managing Talent, Global Marketing, New Product Development, and Branding and Marketing Communications

    Stage 3

    - Integrative Management Practice Case Study
    This stage will demonstrate your ability to carry out a structured inquiry into a significant problem or issue that is important to your organisation. It will be delivered through a mix of workshops, independent study and study groups.

    The highlight of the city’s cultural year is the Brighton Festival. The event is held each May and is England’s biggest arts festival, which showcases arts and performance from around the world. Brighton is also home to the UK’s oldest working cinema, the Duke of York’s, which shows alternative and mainstream films. The city is also well known for its exciting music scene and hosts The Great Escape music festival.

    Whether you take your sport seriously or just want to keep fit, Brighton offers all kinds of sports opportunities and facilities, on and off campus. You can also make the most of the location, and play volleyball, basketball and windsurfing down by the beach. The seafront is also the finishing point for the famous London – Brighton bicycle ride and the quirky veteran car run.
