    About the course

A degree in mathematics or statistics is one of the best choices for a career in business.

Mathematics with Business BSc(Hons) offers students a substantially mathematical learning experience (approximately two thirds of course outcomes), alongside an insight into the applications of maths into the real business world. Students interested in an even split of learning between mathematical and business-related subject areas may be more interested in our Mathematics and Business BSc(Hons) qualification delivered through our Hastings campus.

Mathematics with Business develops the skills needed to analyse and solve the complex problems faced by modern businesses. You will cultivate a strong grounding in fundamental mathematics, and develop techniques related to analysing management information, finance, marketing and business operations.

  • Course content

    Course structure

For the first two years, the emphasis is on developing essential knowledge and techniques in mathematics and business. This provides a solid foundation for specialisation in the final year where you can chose the modules that interest you most.

At the beginning of the second year, you may opt to undertake a paid work placement which will enable you to use your specialist skills on real projects in a leading organisation.

In the final year you undertake a major individual project supervised by an academic member of staff.

    Areas of study

There are three main subject groups: core mathematical skills covering areas such as algebra and calculus; mathematical topics including statistics and its applications; and business-related modules in marketing, finance and economics. In the final year you can choose modules that suit your interests and career plans, and you will also undertake a major project.

A wide range of computer packages are used for modelling and statistical analysis, and there is a strong focus on presentation skills and communication, producing realistic solutions to practical business problems.
