    Course structure

For each module, students attend five days of teaching, alongside a service evaluation improvement project. Through these activities, participants engage in research-based learning, linking theory with practice and exploring their roles as leaders in clinical settings.

    - Each module in year 1 and 2 consists of five taught days of seminars, discussions and intensive group work.
    - The dissertation is supported by regular one-to-one tutorials, and attendance at a monthly three-hour dissertation seminar and action-learning set.
    - There will be reading, writing and research tasks between sessions and a written assignment, a service evaluation and improvement project, at the end of each module.
    - The MA cohort will meet as a whole group for each taught day in one centre (either Brighton or London).
    - All five taught days will be led by the module lead.

During the dissertation year learners attend separate one-to-one tutorials, as well as monthly seminars and meetings as an action learning set.

    Areas of study

    Leadership in Clinical Contexts
An overview of the field of clinical leadership and introduction to the MA as well as existing as a standalone postgraduate module. Participants gain a critically informed view of the centrality of leadership and how one adopts leadership roles in order to bring about improvements in patient safety and service improvement.

Leadership and Change Agency in Organisations
This module shows how leadership can contribute to embracing change as a creative opportunity to evaluate current practice and develop new processes focused upon improving the quality and safety of patients. It gives an overview of how organisations work and the roles people adopt within them. Participants will gain an informed analysis of leadership and organisational theories and their relevance to successful change, being aware of obstacles to change and the strategies to overcome them in order to keep leadership focused on patient care and improved service delivery.

Ethical and Reflective Leadership in Clinical Settings
Participants are encouraged to critically consider all aspects of the ethical and reflective aspects of leadership in clinical settings. This will cover the conceptual and practical aspects of ethics and professional reflection. Participants gain an informed and critically reflective view, resulting in a more considered and holistic approach to both individual patients and the wider leadership context of patient care.

    Business Leadership in Clinical Settings
This module improves the understanding of the impact of business and management on patient care and how clinical leadership can enhance the quality of service delivery and the efficient uses of resources to improve the quality of the experience of patients? experiences. Participants undertake a critical analysis of management and leadership theories relating to health and other public sector contexts and their significance in improving service delivery.

    Clinical Commissioning for Quality Care
This module develops clinicians and practitioners in order that they can critically appraise commissioning theory, policy and practice, drawing from clinical research evidence, organisational change theory and market development models. Participants undertake an in-depth analysis, in the local context, of change methodology, use of the clinical research evidence base and choice of commissioning method.

    Research-based Learning in Clinical Settings
This module provides an understanding of the distinctive approaches that comprises research-based learning (RBL) in clinical settings. RBL, in the context of this MA, is a systematic exploration and analysis of service, aimed at improving patient care, which relies upon a range of relevant strategies of inquiry, but which eschews traditional boundaries such as between qualitative and quantitative methods, theory and practice, science and art. It calls upon participants to engage their analytical skills, thinking and feeling. It demands that researchers use both intuition and attention to evidence and reason in service of the goal of improved patient care and safety.

    Dissertation: Leadership for Service Improvement
The dissertation brings all the skills and knowledge acquired on the previous modules together in a coherent narrative which addresses the challenges and opportunities of clinical leadership in the health service. Participants will conduct a service evaluation and improvement project which benefits their organisation and patient care, and through which they show evidence of an ability to synthesise learning from across previous modules in this MA programme.
