About the course
The Centre for Health Research offers full and part-time research degrees (MPhil and PhD) to people working in clinical practice, or in education, who are interested in building knowledge and research skills around a focused topic. The majority of research students are part-time, in mid-career and are balancing work and family commitments. We also offer two professional doctorates, in Nursing and in Midwifery. These are intended for senior professional practitioners with a relevant masters degree. Three supported assignments and a final dissertation give these students the opportunity to study research topics in professional practice.
As well as being an important part of the school's research culture, all stage 1 and postgraduate research students are members or honorary members of the University of Brighton Doctoral College. The Doctoral College champions a stimulating researcher development environment and connects the university's research community. The Doctoral College offers both students and supervisors practical support to achieve high and timely project completion.
MPhil and PhD programmes
Many people starting a research degree are unsure about the most appropriate methods of research and how to use them. Training in research methods and guidance from supervisors are essential elements of the support provided. Students can join modules, seminars, workshops and special interest group meetings to provide an overview of different methodologies and methods. There is an annual research conference at which student and staff present their work and there is opportunity for cross disciplinary sharing. Every research student has a supervisory team of two or more staff, which may be cross-disciplinary. In addition, a 'thesis panel', consisting of the supervisors, the Director of Postgraduate Study and the head of school, ensures optimum support and facilities throughout the programme and quality-assures the research process and output.
Professional doctorate programme
This four-year, part-time programme includes seminars on research methods and policy/organisational issues to support the practice-focused assignments and dissertation. It is designed to enable professional practitioners to solve problems and innovate in practice by drawing on the best possible evidence.
