    About the course

    The course is part of the school's continuing professional development provision, designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of those involved in education, training or development, whether professional or voluntary. Credit-rated routes to the various awards enable you to build from postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma to masters level.

    Course structure

    These specialist routes provide a flexible work-based learning programme developed in association with local education authorities. This is part of a government drive to improve the skills in the teaching profession. We can typically work with a single school or a cluster of schools to meet specific local needs.

    A flexible framework combines academic study with work-based action learning and action research, a process whereby your day-to-day professional activity informs your development through reflection and peer discussion.

    Programmes are arranged to fit in with your working patterns and usually include twilight and Saturday sessions. It can also be based entirely within your school /organisation or delivered as a bespoke programme for a cluster of schools.

    Areas of study

    The course offers a range of modules relevant to you if you work in education and training. This enables us to provide specialist routes to help enhance your skills and knowledge.

    The routes we offer include:

    Chemistry education, this route is designed for you if you teach chemistry for all or part of your timetable. It will
    particularly benefit teachers who do not have chemistry as their main qualification.

    Mathematics education , this route is designed for non-specialist teachers of mathematics at secondary level. It is intended for you if you are currently teaching some mathematics or if you are considering returning to teaching and would like to be able to teach mathematics at secondary level.

    One-to-one learning relationships (tutoring, supervising, mentoring, coaching), this route is designed for you if you have particular responsibility for tutoring, supervising, mentoring or coaching individuals.

    Education leadership and management , if you are an aspiring leader and wish to deepen your understanding beyond a more practical hints and tips approach to management this route could be for you.

    Dyslexia / autism, if you have particular responsibility for supporting children with specific learning difficulties and disabilities these routes could be for you.

    Syllabus

    The PG Certificate is a one-year part-time programme comprising two electives. The first of these electives is usually a taught module. The second is a practice-based module which utilises action learning as a strategy to support participants' practice-based professional enhancement. Alternatively, it is possible to choose two taught modules.

  • Fees and costs

    The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2012-13. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.

    The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.

    What's included in the fee?

    When costs such as health or criminal record checks, field trips or use of specialist materials are incurred as a mandatory requirement of the course they are included in your tuition fee.

    You may incur additional costs depending on the optional modules or activities you choose. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees.     Arts

    The highlight of the city’s cultural year is the Brighton Festival. The event is held each May and is England’s biggest arts festival, which showcases arts and performance from around the world. Brighton is also home to the UK’s oldest working cinema, the Duke of York’s, which shows alternative and mainstream films. The city is also well known for its exciting music scene and hosts The Great Escape music festival.

    Sports

    Whether you take your sport seriously or just want to keep fit, Brighton offers all kinds of sports opportunities and facilities, on and off campus. You can also make the most of the location, and play volleyball, basketball and windsurfing down by the beach. The seafront is also the finishing point for the famous London – Brighton bicycle ride and the quirky veteran car run.
