The course is designed to support the development of knowledge and skills required for higher level teaching assistant status (HLTA) assessment for which is undertaken externally by education services provider VT4S.
About the course
This course is designed for teaching assistants currently working at Key Stage 1 and 2, and wishing to further their career opportunities and academic credibility in this field.
The main focus is on your current workplace and there are opportunities to visit other schools. Your activities at work and university-based study are tightly integrated throughout the course.

Applicants are normally expected to meet the following entry requirements: one year as primary teaching assistant or other similar experience; currently working at least 15 hours per week as primary teaching assistant; English and mathematics GCSE grade C or equivalent (one may be accepted if you're studying for the other and grade C or above is predicted); consent of employing school to release you to attend sessions, provide an in-school learning; facilitator and support school based course activities -
Course content
Course structure
The course is part-time and runs for two years and six months: a summer term April-June followed by two academic years September-June.
Each year of study includes a block of approximately three study days in April, regular sessions one day per week and one Saturday per month.
You will also spend one day per week on work-based activities, reflection and private study.
Areas of study
The programme will develop your curriculum knowledge in mathematics, English, science and ICT. You will also learn how to enhance your communication and presentation skills, how to plan, deliver and assess learning, and understand new initiatives and social and political issues in education.

Fees and costs
The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2013-14. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.

After successfully completing the course, you may progress to the Professional Studies in Learning and Development degree, then to Qualified Teacher Status via the Graduate Teacher Programme or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)-providing you meet government entry requirements for teaching.
