About the course
This top-up course develops the skills and specialist knowledge appropriate for careers in sports training and coaching, or exercise and health. It specifically builds on the Sport and Fitness foundation degree, but can also be used as a top-up for similar sport and exercise science programmes with vocational relevance.

GCSE (minimum grade C) or Access equivalent:
At least three subjects including English language and mathematics or a science. We do not accept Functional Skills or Key Skills as a GCSE equivalent. Applicants must have already passed, or be in the process of taking the required GCSEs.
Foundation degree/HND
60% or merit grade from a Foundation degree or HND in an appropriate subject. In addition, students must have passed the following modules as part of their Foundation degree/HND: Work placement/experience type module (min 15 CATS credits); Level 2 module (min 15 CATS credits) in Sport and/or Exercise Physiology; Level 2 module (min 15 CATS credits) in Sport and/or Exercise Psychology; and one module each (min 15 CATS credits), ideally level 2, for two of the following areas: sport and/or exercise biomechanics, nutrition, sports/exercise coaching, sports/exercise development/policy.
Other:
DipHE (240 CATs credits) or equivalent from BSc Sport and Exercise Science or similar. Accredited prior learning (APEL) may also be considered.

Course structure
In addition to the major Applied and Integrated Vocational Studies module, students can choose from a range of options allowing them to specialise in an area of personal interest or to keep a wide breadth of study. Options cover areas such as sport and exercise physiology, psychology, nutrition, biomechanical analysis, coaching and sport development.
An extended work placement enables students to build practical experience whilst applying their knowledge in relevant settings. Examples of previous placements include Reed Health and Fitness Club, Downs Hotel Football Club, Bracknell Forest Schools Sports Partnership, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Leisure Centre.

The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2013-14. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and may be subject to small increases, in line with inflation.
The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full- or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take.
What's included in the fee?
When costs such as health or criminal record checks, field trips or use of specialist materials are incurred as a mandatory requirement of the course they are included in your tuition fee.
You may incur additional costs depending on the optional modules or activities you choose. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. Our Eastbourne campus is located at the foot of the South Downs National Park, about ten minutes walk from the seafront and 20 minutes from the pier and Eastbourne town centre. Almost 3,000 students are based here.

Living in Eastbourne
Eastbourne’s buzzing university community and compact town gives it a laid back and friendly feel. The town combines the traditional seaside attractions with modern nightlife, a wide range of sporting activities and an exciting arts scene.
Social scene
The student community in Eastbourne ensures it has a thriving social scene, with dedicated student nights at many of the town’s pubs and clubs. Eastbourne’s expanding nightlife includes trendy cocktail bars, laid-back country pubs and modern nightclubs.

Arts
The striking Towner contemporary art museum in Eastbourne features international exhibitions as well as a permanent art collection. Eastbourne's six theatres give you a chance to see West End musicals, touring shows, live music and comedy.

Sports
Eastbourne has long been the home of pre-Wimbledon tennis tournaments at Devonshire Park. Eastbourne also hosts an extreme sports festival and the Beachy Head Marathon that takes place across the South Downs National Park.
Senior lecturer
Psychology and Physiology BSc(Hons) (University of Reading); Sports Psychology MSc (Liverpool John Moores University); PhD Anticipation Skill in Tennis (Liverpool John Moores University).
Nick lectures in a range of topics including sport and exercise psychology, motor behaviour and research methods.
His research work focuses on the training of anticipation and decision-making skills in academy football players and young elite tennis players.
He has worked in professional sport, delivering performance enhancement to national and international level athletes.
The course prepares students to enter the work force with evidence of relevant experience, skills and intellectual knowledge related to sport and fitness. Employment opportunities include fitness instruction, personal trainers, coaching, sports science support, health promotion and sports development. Graduates can also progress to further study at masters level in sport or exercise-related areas.
