This one-day seminar will provide an overview of the energy related criteria for the Code for Sustainable Homes. The seminar will review the demands for energy in houses, identify the requirements of the code and review the renewable energy technologies appropriate for reducing the consumption of fossil fuels.

Attendance at the seminar will benefit and interest professionals from any built environment discipline, including architecture, surveying, developing and contracting.

The seminar willl be held at the Creativity Centre, Cockcroft Building, University of Brighton, Moulsecoomb, Brighton BN2 4GJ.

Content:

Drivers and Environmental Requirement
Session one will give an overview of the environmental imperatives determining the need to reduce our consumption of fossil fuels. The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive will be described together with its impact on Part L of the Building Regulations and the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Low Energy Design
This session will identify the key factors in the design of low energy buildings and consider the alternative approaches of active and passive design. It will consider the requirements of both fabric and ventilation.

Generation of Hot Water
Session three will concentrate on renewable energy technologies for the generation of hot water, both for space heating and domestic hot water. The session will focus on the use of both solar and geothermal energy.

Generation of Electricity
The technologies for on-site electricity generation using wind turbines, solar photovoltaic and combined heat and power will be considered, together with their application to domestic properties.
