Post Graduate Experience with a Community and Voluntary Organisation

The current economic climate has made it particularly difficult for graduates to find relevant employment on finishing their degrees and lack of experience and contacts often appears to be a hurdle in securing a first job.

The University of Brighton has responded to this through the development of a new, one semester, post graduate module which enables participants to enhance their employment experience in community sectors while gaining a 20 credit Master’s module.

Cupp and Active student are beginning to organise placements for the Community Participation and Development module for University of Brighton students for the coming academic year. Students will be looking to undertake a volunteering role/ community based placement with organisations which could be regular and ongoing or a fixed project of 50 hours.

Student volunteers and placement students aim to make a significant contribution to organisations and create ‘added value’, whilst gaining real world experience

South East Coastal Communities (SECC) was funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) as a demonstrator project from 2008-2011. The aim of the project was for universities to work collaboratively with members of their local communities in order to build capacity to meet health and wellbeing needs. The programme sought to encourage knowledge exchange between universities and community across the South East coastal region, involving nine higher education institutions

Social Engagement Research Sabbatical

We are pleased to announce that Niki Khan from the School of Applied Social Sciences successfully applied to the new Social Engagement Research Sabbatical Scheme at the University. Niki joined Brighton as a lecturer in Psychology in 2008 from the University of Sussex where she completed a Phd in Social Anthropology on ethnic militancy amongst young men in a migrant community in Karachi, Pakistan.
