**Exciting opportunity to keep fundraising for On Our Doorsteps that doesn’t cost you a penny!**
The University is working with All4Charities – a Brighton based organisation that negotiate commission with online retailers which they then donate to specified charities. If you shop via their site (registration takes a few minutes and membership is free) the price that you pay is no higher than if bought directly from the retailer’s website. Yet any purchase you make whilst online shopping will automatically ensure that On Our Doorsteps receives 100% of that retailer's commission (usually 5-10% of the price you pay). You can choose from over 500 retailers including John Lewis, M&S, EBay, iTunes, Amazon etc.
We are excited about this as an opportunity to raise funds to keep supporting innovative partnership projects between the university and its local communities in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings that put their collective expertise, networks and resources into solving local social issues. For the past three years we have always had more applications for great ideas than we can fund and demand has been consistently high for us to keep funds in the pot.
So… we are not asking you to reach into your pocket for a donation – but we are asking that if you have plans to do some shopping online, would you consider having a go at it through this site?
If you are shopping anyway and have an extra 2 minutes to spare each time to log on to the site then that would be fantastic… You may not be able to see the value of your donation immediately (the site has taken a few days to update in some of our trials). But it does work – and every penny counts towards supporting local communities and academic staff to work together to make a difference.
The steps to try this out are:
- Register on the all4charities site (http://www.all4charities.co.uk/register.aspx )
- Select University of Brighton to support On Our Doorsteps from the list
- You will be sent a validation email immediately. Validate your account.
- Choose from over 500 retailers and shop as normal.
If you want to look at any of the projects we’ve supported before, take a look at the web page or contact me for further information: http://www.brighton.ac.uk/cupp/whatwedo/community-knowledge-exchange/on-our-doorsteps.html
Get involved with the Global Sharing Day
Global Sharing Day 2013 will take place worldwide on Sunday June 2nd. The People Who Share, The Big Lunch & Meal Sharing are coming together to set a World Record for the most people sharing food in a single day!
Last year’s Global Sharing Day reached over 60 million people from 147 countries – it was the ‘Greatest Share on Earth’. The theme for this year’s event is.... FOOD! Every year tonnes of edible food goes to landfill, yet there are millions globally living in food poverty.
Cupp is pledging support to this event. To find out more about how to get involved on the day please visit Global Sharing Day

Cupp supports many food and sustainability initiatives - below a staff volunteer describes the great work being done at the Falmer vegetable garden & the University of Brighton Food Co-Op.
Lucy Dance is a programme assistant at the university’ Schoolof Education. Through the staff volunteering scheme, the university supported her volunteering in establishing a vegetable garden on Falmer campus and promoting the University of Brighton Food Co-Op. It’s all part of the Sustainability Action Network, which aims to make the university a better place to work and study for staff and students. Besides introducing people to the benefits of local, seasonal produces, the projects have had the unplanned benefit of increasing interaction between different departments too.
" I was delighted when the Staff Volunteering Scheme was launched as I’ve been a keen volunteer with several local charities and community groups for many years. I initially applied to the scheme to visit vegetable projects across Brighton to gain knowledge and understanding on how to start the vegetable garden on Falmer campus ".

10 down, 10 to go! Cupp makes it into a second decade!
In 2013 Cupp is 10 years old, and we intend to celebrate the excellent achievements of university and community partners. All are welcome to attend our celebratory event on 8th July in central Brighton, see http://bit.ly/Xiik3F
Alongside acknowledging the great work that has been done over the last 10 years, our theme for 2013 is to explore the future for Brighton as a community engaged University. Our aim is to celebrate the 10 years of community university partnership working at University of Brighton and develop an ambitious vision for the following 10 years. To this end we will be producing a number of publications, activities and events including:
- A publication of social engagement case studies that illustrate the University of Brighton’s work with local communities
- A self-publishing web resource celebrating partnerships between University of Brighton and local communities whereby those involved can tell their own stories using Community 21 software
- 2 publications that describe Cupp in 2013: 1 aimed at university of Brighton staff, students and local community partners to help them participate in partnerships; another for other universities and policy makers interested in our model
- A study into the characteristics of the future university that will help evolve strategy. This will include a symposium to develop the ‘day in the life of the engaged university -University of Brighton in 2023’. We hope that this work will contribute to other relevant activity such as NCCPE’s work on the future of the engaged university, and a national project that is exploring the future of communities. This study will lead to a short publication that describes a future day in the life of a community engaged University of Brighton
