MA Information Studies students looking for research projects
Students on the MA in Information Studies undertake a piece of research in an organisation which forms the basis for their dissertation. The research must be related to some aspect of information, communication or archive work.
Timings
The procedure varies according to whether the students are full-time or part-time.
Full-time students: Full-time students work on a research project in an organisation through July and August. They write up their results in September for submission to the university on 1st October.
Part-time students: Part-time students will normally start their placements during October, spending approximately a day a week in the placement organisation until the following February, with final submission in May.
Research project
All students are encouraged to work up the research proposal together with the organisation, so that it's mutually beneficial. Students also have to prepare an executive summary for their host organisation as part of their dissertation submission. This usually summarises the research in 2-3 pages and concentrates on findings and recommendations.
Recent dissertation topics have included:
- Investigating Web 2.0 technologies as a way of making information work more effectively
- Marketing specialist collections
- Evaluating library services for disabled children
These examples are mainly ‘library’ based but could be adapted for community organisations.
