Description
10 Down 10 to Go! Designing our future
In 2013 Cupp is 10 years old and we will be holding a celebratory event in central Brighton on 8th July starting at 6pm.
As well as celebrating everyone’s achievements our theme for the year is to explore the future vision for Brighton as a community engaged University. Whilst the University of Brighton and community partners have made real strides in the last decade to work together for mutual benefit we are hoping to generate an ambitious vision that will help us develop over the next 10 years.
This event will contribute to this process and will include a keynote talk from Professor Sir David Watson, Principal of Green Templeton College, Oxford and Vice Chancellor of University of Brighton when Cupp was initiated in 2003. David Watson will explore the historical dynamics of the relationship between universities and the communities which founded and sustain them. His core proposition is that communities made universities before universities helped to make communities.Taking Brighton, and the experience of CUPP as an example, he will attempt to analyse how the resulting relationships work at their best, and to identify the key inhibitors of progress, from either side. He will conclude with a series of challenges to CUPP, to the University of Brighton, and to its current and potential partners. (See David Watson's Biog)
There will also be contributions from university staff, students and community partners who have been instrumental in the work. We will also discuss the challenges and opportunities this presents to a conventional university like the University of Brighton.
The event is free to attend and we really hope as many of you can come as possible.
