Developing Young People’s Skills in Digital Media
Developing Young People’s Skills in Digital Media - School of Art Media and Design | Wired Sussex
The digital and creative economy is one of the fastest developing sectors in the UK so it’s vital that we support our young people locally to gain the skills they’ll need to be part of that workforce. This project aims to develop the digital media skills of pupils in local schools, develop the mentoring skills of University of Brighton students on the MA Digital Media Arts course and to forge new links with the community organisation Same Sky to help this happen. Two Brighton schools are involved in a digital media cultural exchange with three schools in the Cherokee Nation, USA and are trialling uses of digital media in the classroom to communicate with each other. A particular aim of the project is to co-produce some digital art and display this at the Children’s Parade in May 2013 organised by Same Sky. To do this the pupils and teachers will need support in developing their skills in digital media and using these skills with Same Sky to prepare artefacts for the Children’s Parade. To this end MA students will provide direct support to pupils and teachers as part of an existing course module in social media ‘Virtual Culture & Network Practices’. A wider aim is to develop links beneficial to Same Sky that will help them include use of digital media into the workshops they offer.
