Dr Juliet Millican

Deputy Director (Academic)

Juliet manages both the student community engagement and the international research and development programmes within Cupp. This includes course and module design and development across the university to encompass community based and partnership approaches to issues of sustainability, marginalisation and social justice. It involves management of a cross university module in Community Participation and Development. Our international programme provides support to universities in other areas to develop their own locally based engagement work and is managed via externally funded joint projects or individual offers of support.

Juliet has over 20 years teaching experience including 8 years in adult and non formal education, 8 years in Access to Higher education and 6 years in Higher Education. She has also worked extensively on short term international consultancies in the field of adult and community education and adult literacy, supporting programme design and evaluation in a range of African and Asian countries including Gambia, Senegal, South Africa, Egypt, India and Nepal.

Her teaching includes experiential and participatory approaches to teaching and learning, civil society and citizenship and local and international community development. 

Her recent research has involved the role of Higher Education in post conflict environments,  student community engagement and the significance of insiders and outsiders in transformational learning. Doctoral studies involved field work in Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, Africa and the UK.
