Admissions
We welcome applications from students with disabilities, and the disability and dyslexia team are here to help you.
If you meet the academic criteria for selection, and indicate on your application form that you have a disability or dyslexia, you will be contacted by a member of the disability and dyslexia team to talk about how we can support you.
Declaring a disability
You may declare a disability to the university at any time, but try to tell us immediately so we can arrange support. This discussion can remain confidential if you choose. However, complete confidentiality will limit the amount of academic support that can be arranged for you.
If you declare a disability when you apply for university accommodation we will ask you for more information about your needs so we can try to arrange the support you need.
Occasionally, if your disability requires significant support, we may invite you to university to meet your support officer and talk about your needs. This discussion is separate from an academic interview, although it may be conducted on the same day.
Evidence
Please provide written evidence of your disability, so we can offer appropriate support. This is important especially if you need support with exams or written assignments, because we need to make sure we're being fair to everyone. The evidence should be recent, written in English, from a doctor or other medical professional.
Access to buildings
The university is constantly being updated to improve accessibility, but not all buildings are accessible to wheelchair users or people with other mobility impairments. And some of our campuses are nestled in the South Downs and may not always be accessible.
There are designated disabled parking bays at each site. If you have mobility difficulties which mean you need to park near buildings please let us know so we can arrange a vehicle permit for you.
Though we always consider alternative study locations for students if access is difficult, we encourage all prospective students who are pyhsically disabled to visit the university and meet a support worker to discuss access issues.
Public transport
Brighton and Hove Buses have ramps and allocated wheelchair spaces, providing easy access to and from Brighton town centre. Stagecoach buses offer a number of easy access buses on routes around Eastbourne and Hastings. Please be aware not all train stations are fully accessible.
Other issues
When planning your move to university, you may wish to consider the following issues:
- lectures/seminars/tutorials (eg permission to tape lectures, services of a note-taker, provision of lecture notes/groupwork)
- examination and assessment (eg extra time, scribe, presentations)
- living arrangements
- mobility and travel
- practical classes/fieldwork.
To find out how the university can support you with any of these issues contact the disability and dyslexia team.
