Disability and dyslexia

Learning support

Lectures

Lectures are an important part of learning at university, but many disabled students struggle to make the most of them. You may find it hard to write notes, or you may struggle to remember what’s being said for long enough to write it down, or maybe you make lots of notes but struggle to read them.

We can arrange support to make sure you don’t miss out, including loaning recording devices and portable note-taking equipment and providing a note-taker.

The main teaching spaces have been designed to help disabled students; hearing loops have been installed in many of the teaching rooms, lifts provide access for wheelchair users and rooms are marked with large, clear signage for students with visual impairments.

Equipment

Some university computers are specially equipped to help you if you have a disability or dyslexia. You will find these computers in computer pool rooms and libraries. They offer:

  • adjustable computer workspaces
  • low-level photocopiers
  • induction loops
  • screen readers
  • screen magnification
  • mind-mapping software
  • easy-to-see keyboards

If you have a disability you can borrow more books for longer periods, and if you receive Disabled Students' Allowances you can claim back some of the cost of photocopying.

Find more information on the Information Services website.

IT Training

The disability and dyslexia team can provide IT training to those students who are recommended IT equipment or specialist software via the Access Centre. Staff will work with students to ensure they get the most out of the technology available. Students who do not receive Disabled Students' Allowances, can access loan equipment.
