Disability and dyslexia

Deaf and hearing impairment

We have a support service that helps deaf and hard-of-hearing students. You can get support from the disability support officers from the disability and dyslexia team.

Support available

You can get lots of support to help you learn and enjoy university, including:

  • advice and guidance for you and your department about how your disability may affect study tasks, and how best to help you
  • human support: note-takers, interpreters, communicators, lip-speakers
  • information about, and assistance with, Disabled Students' Allowances applications
  • examination/assessment recommendations - such as extra time, rest breaks, the use of a scribe or computer. Read more about examination and assessment recommendations
  • two types of radio aid systems: conference microphones and minicoms, can be borrowed by prior arrangement
  • hearing dog support
  • loop systems in some teaching rooms and lecture theatres.

The support officer will continue to give you and your department support and guidance as you need it throughout your course.

Where possible, usually before you start your course, you will have a chance to meet your support worker. At this meeting you can talk about your specific requirements in relation to your course and the induction week timetables. If you have never worked with a support worker in an educational setting, this meeting gives you a chance to learn about your support worker's role.
