Duties

Brian is route leader for all secondary science routes: PGCE Biology, PGCE Chemistry, PGCE Physics, PGCE Physics with Maths, 2 Year BA (chemistry Education) with QTS and Subject Knowledge Enhancement (Chemistry). He is also a research mentor within the Education Research Centre. Biography

Brian graduated in Chemistry from the University of Hull where he also gained his PGCE and MA (Science Education). He has subsequently obtained an EdD from the University of Sussex. He joined the University in January 2008 having taught Chemistry and Science for many years in 11-18 secondary schools in North Lincolnshire, Hull and Sussex. During this period he had extensive experience as a Head of Science, Senior Teacher and as an Assistant Headteacher. He has gained NPQH. Brian was a Lead Teacher for Science and he served on the QCA Science Panel.

Teaching

Brian currently lead the PGCE Science programme. He also teaches on the Subject Knowledge Enhancement programme and contributes to the MA programme.

Research Interests & Projects

Brian holds responsibility for supporting new researchers within the School of Education. Brian has undertaken the evaluation of the University of Sussex INSTEP project. His current research involves

  • Using video technology for (1) beginning and mid-career teacher professional learning, (2) to develop subject knowledge and (3) enhancing beginning and mid-career teachers' classroom practice
  • The changing nature of university-school partnerships
  • Aspects of Science Education
