Biography

Dr. Vicky Johnson is a Senior Research Fellow in the Education Research Centre at the University of Brighton. She has over twenty years of experience as a researcher and consultant in international social development and community development in the UK, with particular expertise in the areas of: strategic planning, policy development, participatory action research, children and young people’s participation, child protection/safeguarding, gender and inclusion, and monitoring, evaluation, impact assessment and learning.

Vicky has consistently published in the field of children and young people’s participation and holds a PhD in Childhood and Youth Research, specifically examining how changing contexts affect children’s participation. She has trained professionals and research teams to build their capacity in research and evaluation methodology and has been invited as a guest lecturer/ presenter at Universities, INGO and donor events, having also taught on Masters programmes for International Childhoods, Education and Development Studies at Birkbeck College.

Vicky has substantial experience of leading participatory research processes, training, evaluation and providing expert input for a number of international organizations including UNHCR, ILO, DFID, SIDA, CIDA, IPPF, Save the Children UK and Alliance, Plan International, ActionAid, and local national organisations across Africa, Asia and Latin America. In the UK, she has worked with local and national government and a range of NGOs, for example Brighton and Hove Council and a number of other local councils around the UK, Crawley and Croydon PCTs, the Croydon Children’s Fund. She recently led the international programmes and partnerships work of an international development charity called ChildHope who has a core principle the Right to Education and was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire.
