Mathematics Development Programme (MDPT)

Update June 2011

Please note: this programme is currently under review. We are planning details of the course provision and will publish further information on this website once the course structure is finalised. We intend to recruit non-specialist teachers or returning teachers to start the new course in January 2012.

Graduate Certificate/Postgraduate Certificate

We have delivered our mathematics development programme for teachers since 2007. This professional development programme is designed for non-specialist teachers of mathematics who currently teach mathematics for all or part of their timetable. The programme is also suitable for those who are considering returning to teaching and would like to be able to offer mathematics at secondary level.

Our mathematics development programme for teachers will:

  • boost your mathematical skills and knowledge
  • increase your confidence and effectiveness in the classroom
  • inspire you to promote learning in mathematics that is challenging and engaging for pupils
  • help you to identify and build upon your previous knowledge
  • develop your capacity for future self study.

Programme structure

Programme content will be based around the mathematics needed to gain a full and profound understanding of the National Curriculum, although it will not be exclusively curriculum mathematics. You will have the opportunity to broaden your experience of mathematics through topics that lie outside and beyond the regular syllabus.

The Training Agency for Schools (TA) have recently reviewed and restructured the aims and support structures for this course. It will now be run as pilot subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course for serving and returning teachers. The School of Education at the University of Brighton has been accepted as one of the institutions to run this revised version of the course.

The course will be designed to have minimum impact on the school day but will include face to face teaching sessions as well as elements of virtual/distance learning.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the mathematics course you must have qualified teacher status (QTS) and have completed your induction period.

Please note: Teachers who currently hold either a degree or ITT specialism in mathematics will not be eligible for the mathematics development programme.
