Leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Education Studies (PGCert)

Programme overview

This programme is designed for mainstream teachers including those who may have particular responsibility for supporting children with autism and who wish to deepen their understanding beyond a more practical ‘hints and tips’ approach and to link this learning to the School Improvement Plan. The programme will enable you to:

  • Extend and enhance your current practice
  • Gain knowledge of current thinking in the understanding of autism
  • Develop frameworks for understanding the range of issues surrounding working with autistic learners
  • Increase your confidence and effectiveness in supporting autistic learners
  • Learn how to implement change in a range of policy contexts
  • Develop your capacity for masters level study
  • Develop lasting support networks with other professionals and the university's postgraduate community
  • Gain credits towards an MA Education

Programme structure

This one-year, part-time programme is led by specialists from the University of Brighton and includes regular contact with tutors through taught sessions, on-line learning and face-to-face tutorials. It has a flexible framework that combines academic study with work-based learning and action research, and enables you to combine day-to-day professional activity with masters level thinking and research.

Areas of study

The programme consists of two main components: developing knowledge of the theoretical basis of contemporary approaches to autism and practical application of this learning through exploration of your work with autistic learners.

Outcomes

On completion of this programme you can anticipate enhanced practice, an improved experience for autistic learners and an ability to develop effective strategies for your school. You can also achieve the award of a PGCert or gain credits toward an MA in Education.

A first degree and experience within an education setting.

Time commitment

Taught sessions will take place on Saturdays and will consist of three full days and seven afternoon sessions – dates to be confirmed.

Location

All sessions will be held at the University of Brighton’s Falmer Campus.

Mode of study

You will undertake projects which are designed to be readily accommodated within your working practice.

Tuition fees

£1,500 for 2013/14 entry
