Leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Education Studies (PGCert)

Programme overview

This programme is designed for those who teach chemistry for all or part of their timetable. It will particularly benefit teachers who do not have chemistry as their main qualification. The programme will enable you to:

  • Boost your chemistry skills and knowledge
  • Gain up-to-date knowledge in the latest chemistry teaching methods, including ICT
  • Increase your confidence and effectiveness in the classroom
  • Enhance your ability to promote learning in chemistry that is challenging and engaging for pupils
  • Develop your capacity for masters level study
  • Develop lasting support networks with other chemistry professionals and the university's postgraduate community
  • Gain credits towards an MA Education

Programme structure

This one-year, part-time programme is led by specialists from the University of Brighton and includes regular contact with tutors through taught sessions, on-line learning, podcasts, video material and face-to-face tutorials. It has a flexible framework that combines academic study with work-based learning and action research, and enables you to combine day-to-day professional activity with masters level thinking and research.

Areas of study

The programme comprises two main components: education in and through chemistry and subject knowledge development. Material will be drawn from atomic and molecular structures, trends and patterns in the periodic table, energetic, kinetics and equilibria, organic chemistry and analysis.

Outcomes

On completion of this programme you can anticipate improved professional practice, skills and knowledge to develop and implement effective chemistry education in your school. You can also achieve the award of a PGCert or gain credits toward an MA in Education.

Typical entry requirements

A first degree and experience of teaching chemistry to learners aged 11-19.

Time commitment

Taught sessions will take place on four Thursday evenings (5-7pm) and on three Saturday mornings (9am-12 noon) in each term - dates to be confirmed.

Location

All sessions will be held at the University of Brighton’s Falmer Campus. The twilight sessions will be held at local secondary schools within East and West Sussex.

Mode of study

You will undertake projects which are designed to be readily accommodated within your working practice.

Tuition fees

£1,362 for 2011/12 entry.
