Programme overview

This programme is designed for mainstream teachers including those who may have particular responsibility for supporting children with dyslexia and who wish to deepen their understanding beyond a more practical ‘hints and tips’ approach and link this learning to the School Improvement Plan. The programme will enable you to:

  • Extend and enhance your current practice
  • Gain knowledge of current thinking in the understanding of dyslexia
  • Develop frameworks for understanding the range of issues surrounding working with dyslexic learners Increase your confidence and effectiveness in supporting dyslexic learners
  • Learn how to implement change in a range of policy contexts
  • Develop your capacity for masters level study
  • Develop lasting support networks with other professionals and the university's postgraduate community
  • Gain credits towards an MA Education

Programme structure

This one-year, part-time programme is led by specialists from the University of Brighton and includes regular contact with tutors through taught sessions, on-line learning and face-to-face tutorials. It has a flexible framework that combines academic study with work-based learning and action research, and enables you to combine day-to-day professional activity with masters level thinking and research.

Areas of study

The programme consists of two main components: developing knowledge of the theoretical basis of contemporary approaches to dyslexia and on the practical application of this learning through exploration of your work with dyslexic learners.
Outcomes On completion of this programme you can anticipate enhanced practice, an improved experience for dyslexic learners and an ability to develop effective strategies for your school. You can also achieve the award of a PGCert or gain credits toward an MA in Education.

Professional accreditation

Successful completion of the programme may contribute towards claims for professional accreditation from bodies such as the British Dyslexia Association (BDA).
