Mentoring and Coaching: Maximising Potential

Leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Education Studies (PGCert)

Programme overview

This programme is designed for experienced teachers who have particular responsibility for tutoring, supervising, mentoring or coaching individuals. It will enable you to maximise your time and approach in order to get the best out of other people and link these activities to performance management and the School Improvement Plan. The programme will enable you to:

  • Gain up-to-date knowledge about the development of one-to-one learning relationships
  • Develop frameworks for understanding the development of one-to-one learning relationships
  • Increase your confidence and effectiveness in leading and developing others
  • Enhance your ability to extend and promote learning through a mentoring or coaching role
  • Develop your capacity for masters level study
  • Develop lasting support networks with other professionals and the university's postgraduate community
  • Gain credits towards an MA Education

Programme structure

This one-year, part-time programme is led by specialists from the University of Brighton and includes regular contact with tutors through taught sessions, on-line learning and face-to-face tutorials. It has a flexible framework that combines academic study with work-based learning and action research, and enables you to combine day-to-day professional activity with masters level thinking and research.

Areas of study

The programme consists of two main components: developing knowledge and understanding of one-to-one learning relationships and application to practice through exploration of your work as a mentor, coach or supervisor. There is a flexible framework that combines academic study with work-based action learning and action research, a process whereby your day-to-day professional activity informs your development through reflection and peer discussion.

Outcomes

On completion of this programme you can anticipate enhanced practice, improved quality of the mentoring/coaching experience. You can also achieve the award of a PGCert or gain credits toward an MA in Education.

A first degree and experience within an education setting.

Time commitment

Taught sessions will take place on 10 x 2 hour twilight sessions on a Tuesday evening - dates to be confirmed.

Location

All sessions will be held at the University of Brighton’s Falmer Campus.

Mode of study

You will undertake projects which are designed to be readily accommodated within your working practice.

Tuition fees

£1,362 for 2011/12 entry.
