The Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) programme is an exciting new development within the School of Education, created in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council, East Sussex School Improvement Service, and West Sussex County Council.
The PPD programme offers teachers opportunities to gain academic credits for work undertaken in school, or as part of LA INSET.
When does the PPD programme start?
For individual participants three set cohorts start at a date near the beginning of each university term. Terms begin in September, January and April. A cohort may also be started at any date for a group of participants in a particular school or cluster. Call us on 01273 643598 for an application pack.
Can I still follow the traditional MA route?
Yes, modules available will be: issues in learning and teaching, management and leadership in education, and difference and diversity in education.
I teach in a school outside your three partner local authorities - can I still take the PG Cert PES?
Yes, you may be able to take courses offered by our partner local authorities or you may be able to undertake some classroom based project work. Once you have submitted a completed application form you will be sent more information regularly by email.
Can I take modules offered by other local authorities?
This will be up to the individual local authorities. Contact the relevant local authority contact and ask if it would be possible to book a place on your chosen course.

- East Sussex School Improvement Service contact: Ann Bridgland (tel: 01323 432245)
- West Sussex County Council contact: Carolyn Gibbs (tel: 01293 435621).
What about specific courses?
The Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning can be used where applicants have already completed university modules that carry CATS (credit accumulation transfer scheme points). Work from courses accredited in other sectors such as the national programmes NPQH, LfM and PSHE can be used to contribute to the modules offered within the programme. Usually some additional work will be required to ensure that the work meets the assessment criteria of the module as well as the Masters level standard of the university programme. This route is an appropriate way to gain accreditation for many courses including those offered by the National College of School Leadership (i.e. Leading from the Middle, National Profession Quality Headship). For other APEL please contact your local authority advisor or the route leader, Irena Andrews (email: i.l.andrews@brighton.ac.uk)
What will the PG Cert PES cost me?
Please contact the School of Education on 01273 643598 for further information about current fees.
Who pays for the PG Cert PES - would my school/local authority fund it?
You should discuss this with your school and local authority.
When will I need to pay?
You (or your school/local authority) will be invoiced during the first semester of study for the first year. After that, invoices are issued annually.
How much time will I need to spend out of school?
This depends on your chosen route through the course. If you decide to attend at Falmer there will be a minimum requirement of one Saturday early in the year for attendance at induction and three meetings with your professional development tutor during the year. If the course is delivered locally (in your school for example) the attendance pattern may vary.
Will I need to come to the University of Brighton?
It may be possible for the meetings and introductory module to be offered in different venues. Once you have submitted a completed application form you will be sent more information regularly by email.
I'm an NQT. Is it too soon to do this?
This programme can run alongside your NQT profile. You can find out how you can gain credit by insuring that the work required for NQT profile is at masters level.
How do I apply?
