School Direct
We are pleased our partnership schools are offering School Direct routes into teaching. The main aim of School Direct is to allow schools to lead recruitment and selection of trainees, with the expectation that they will then go on to work within the school or group of schools in which they were trained.
Types of training
School Direct offers two types of training places for September 2013; the School Direct Training and School Direct Salaried Training. The University of Brighton is an outstanding provider of teacher training and will offer with partners School Direct (training and salaried programmes) in primary and secondary age phases.
Secondary subjects are:
High priority: Chemistry, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages and Physics.
Other priority: Art and Design, Biology, Computer Science, Dance, Design and Technology, English, Geography, PE and Religious Education.
School Direct Training Programme
The School Direct Training Programme is open to all graduates and funded by tuition fees (£9000) paid by the trainee, who may be eligible to receive a bursary from the Teaching Agency (TA). Scholarships may also be available for candidates who wish to teach priority subjects, and these are awarded by the relevant Subject Associations through a competitive application process.
Those following this School Direct Training Programme will be registered for and can gain a PGCE award from the University of Brighton.
Find out more about bursaries on the Teaching Agency (TA) website.

School Direct Salaried Training Programme
The School Direct Salaried Training Programme is an employment based route into teaching for high quality graduates with three or more years career experience. The trainee is employed as an unqualified teacher by the school. The School Direct Salaried Training Programme replaces the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) which has now closed. NB: There is no longer a supernumerary requirement.
Trainees on this programme should not be expected to teach more than 80% of a qualified teacher's workload and they must receive at least 60 days of structured training activity per year. The trainee will have the same rights and responsibilities as a teacher.
How to apply for School Direct
Schools recruit directly through their own recruitment processes. Currently there are over 23 schools/groups of schools working with the University of Brighton on School Direct.
